Now I lay me down to sleep…
Every night I stand in the hallway between my kids’ rooms, like the world’s most exhausted spiritual traffic director, and recite our bedtime prayer:
“Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
May angels watch me through the night
and wake me with the morning light. Amen.”
Some nights, it’s peaceful and sweet.
Little heads bow. Tiny voices whisper “amen” together. I can almost feel the quiet hush of heaven in our very loud house.
And then… there are the other nights.
The nights where it sounds less like prayer and more like boot camp:
- “I don’t want to go to bed!”
- “I’m not tired!”
- “She won’t give me back my remote!”
Meanwhile, I’m peeling Monkey Boy off someone’s desk like he’s part spider monkey, part stunt double.
Literal. Bedtime. Chaos.
But even on those nights, there’s always the same rhythm:
- Prayer
- Bible verses
- “Sparkle tuckles” – the little girls signature goodnight move
That nightly routine has me thinking a lot about prayer. Not just the sweet, Pinterest-perfect kind, but the real-life kind we tell people to do all the time.
We tell our kids,
“Pray about it.”
We tell our friends,
“I’ll be praying for you.”
We tell overwhelmed people,
“Just pray.”
But if no one has ever really explained the basics of prayer, “just pray” can feel like being handed a manual in a foreign language.
So today, I want to walk through what prayer really is, why God created it, and how to pray in a simple, honest way—even if your “quiet time” happens in a hallway over the sound of bedtime protests.
✨ A Bible Story That Makes Prayer Make Sense
One of my favorite pictures of real, honest prayer is found in 1 Samuel 1, in the story of Hannah.
Hannah wasn’t sitting in a peaceful room with a pretty journal and a latte.
She was heartbroken.
She was misunderstood.
She was desperate for God to move.
Scripture says she prayed “in bitterness of soul” and wept deeply before the Lord. Her lips were moving, but no sound came out, and the priest actually thought she was drunk.
That’s how messy and raw her prayer was.
And she was praying for the thing she most desperately wanted…a child.
But God wasn’t offended.
He was listening.
Hannah poured out her heart honestly, and God met her there. Not because she said the “right” words—but because she said the real ones.
That’s the basics of prayer in one story:
Prayer is not performance.
Prayer is relationship.
⭐ What Prayer Really Is (In Plain Language)
At its core, prayer is communication with God.
Not a performance.
Not a spiritual talent show.
Not something only “super spiritual” people do.
Just you talking to God and God being near to you.
You don’t have to clean yourself up first.
You don’t have to sound like King James English.
You don’t have to know all the right “church” words.
If you can say, “God, it’s me… this is what’s on my heart,” you already know how to pray.

When Jesus taught us to pray “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” He wasn’t just talking about big world events. He meant the stuff of daily life too—bedtime, carpool, work, marriage, friendships, all of it.

Here’s the honest truth:
You don’t need:
- A quiet house
- A long script
- Perfect focus
- Fancy language
You can pray:
- In the hallway
- In the car
- At the sink
- On your lunch break
- Laying in bed at night
The basics of prayer are simple:
Talk to God like He is right there—because He is.
Prayer is not about sounding good.
Prayer is about being real.
⭐ Jesus’ Simple Model of Prayer
In Matthew 6:9–13, Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer. It’s more than a prayer to recite; it’s a model for how to pray:
- Honor God – “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name”
- Seek His will – “Your kingdom come, Your will be done”
- Ask for daily needs – “Give us this day our daily bread”
- Repent – “Forgive us our debts”
- Forgive others – “As we forgive our debtors”
- Ask for protection – “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”
You can follow that pattern in your own words, anytime, anywhere.
⭐ The Simplest Prayer You Can Pray
If all of this still feels like a lot, here’s a prayer that absolutely counts:
“Hey God…
Here’s what’s on my heart today.
I need You.
Thank You.
Amen.”
That’s it.
That’s prayer.
God isn’t waiting for you to impress Him.
He’s inviting you to include Him—in the car, at the table, in the hallway, and in the middle of bedtime chaos.
