Y’all ever have one of those days where you wake up already behind?
Like before your feet even hit the floor, you’re losing?
That was me this morning. I opened my eyes to a child whisper-yelling, “MOM! I can’t find my backpack!” and before I could even answer, someone else was crying because he was cold and couldn’t find the blanket sitting right next to him.
By 7 a.m., I’d cleaned up mystery fluids, found one shoe (not the other), and answered 17 questions about whether Pop-Tarts count as breakfast and dessert. Somewhere between packing lunches and shouting “Hair, teeth, DEODORANT!” for the ninth time, I had that familiar thought:
“I’m failing.”
Not patient enough.
Not organized enough.
Not pretty enough.
Not fun enough.
Not enough enough.
And y’all, the weight of it hits different on the mornings when you’re running late and trying to pray over your kids in the carpool line but end up yelling “WE’RE GONNA BE LATE IF YOU DON’T MOVE YOUR TAILS!” instead of “Dear Lord, bless their day.”
I sat there, hands gripping the steering wheel, thinking, “God, I am failing at this. All of it.”
And then I thought of Peter. You know—big-hearted, impulsive Peter who literally walked on water… until he didn’t.
He was doing it—defying logic, eyes locked on Jesus—until the storm got loud and he started sinking. (Matthew 14:22–33)
And y’all, that’s me. Some days I’m walking on water—praying with the kids, folding the laundry, answering emails—and then the next second I’m sinking in the waves of exhaustion and self-doubt.
But here’s the part that gets me every time: Peter didn’t have to swim his way back to Jesus. Jesus reached out to him.
That means even when I’m sinking in the mess—when I’m late, tired, snappy, and overwhelmed—He doesn’t stand back with crossed arms waiting for me to “get it together.” He reaches down and grabs my hand.
He never asked me to be “enough.” He asked me to be His.
The world says, “You can do it all!” but the Bible says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
So maybe it’s okay that dinner tonight is Walmart mac and cheese and grace. Maybe it’s okay that I don’t feel enough—because He is.
When I finally sat down (on a pile of unfolded laundry, naturally), I realized that the pressure to be “enough” was never coming from God. It was coming from me, scrolling through everyone else’s highlight reels and comparing them to my behind-the-scenes blooper reel.
But you know what? God uses bloopers.
He uses the messy, the late, the tearful, the tired.
He uses the moms who are holding it together with dry shampoo, prayer, and caffeine.
So if today you feel like you’re failing, sinking, or barely treading water, take heart.
You are still seen.
Still loved.
Still chosen.
And still exactly the mom God picked for your kids.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go rewash a load of laundry I forgot about… again.
Because apparently, that’s who I am in this season.
And you know what? God’s okay with that.
He’s not asking for perfection. Just presence.
And maybe that’s enough.
