A Fall Break Devotional for the Overwhelmed Mom
Y’all. It’s fall break season, and the chaos is reigning supreme.
So here we are. Half in school. Half home. All loud.
I should be cleaning the house, resting, or doing fall crafts with the kids—those Pinterest-perfect leaf collages and pumpkin spice everything. But no. Because apparently, none of my kids’ schools could coordinate their schedules like civilized humans.
At any given moment, I have at least four children in the house demanding snacks, attention, and justice for some mysterious sibling crime (“He looked at me wrong!”). Meanwhile, I’m over here trying to survive Zoom call hades—smiling professionally from the neck up while refereeing wrestling matches below camera level.
Add to that: my husband is down for the count, sick in bed. So now I’m working, momming, nursing, and trying not to completely lose my salvation before lunch.
There are moments—like when I trip over a blanket fort on my way to refill yet another juice cup—when I think, I cannot do this another minute.
But then I take a breath, cry for a minute. And remember: this is just a season.
A crazy, sticky, snack-crumb-filled season, yes—but a season nonetheless.
Psalm 30:5 reminds us,
“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
Sometimes that “morning” looks like next week when school schedules return to normal. Sometimes it’s when the toddler finally naps. And sometimes it’s just when you get to drink your coffee while it’s still hot.
Motherhood is full of seasons—each one messy, exhausting, and holy in its own way. The chaos of today won’t last forever. The diapers will end. The snacks will slow down (a little). The “I’m bored” chorus will fade into teenage silence (and then you’ll miss it).
So if you’re in the middle of your own Fall Break Mayhem, hang on.
Breathe deep.
And maybe hide a piece of chocolate in the laundry room.
Because this season? It’s fleeting.
And so is the sticky, beautiful, laugh-until-you-cry kind of love that fills it.
God never wastes a season—even the loud, mismatched, chaotic ones.
