Monkey Boy loves to talk on the phone. Probably because he’s grown up at home with parents who work since he was born. He has one of those classic Fisher-Price phones—the kind with wheels, a cord, and a rotary-style dial (not that any of these kids have ever actually used one).
He brings it to me, holding it out with an expectant grin. “Hello,” he says. And I’m supposed to answer.
Here’s the thing: he never doubts that I will. In fact, he knows I will answer because if I don’t, he simply hands it to me again and says “hello” on repeat until I respond. Much like his big sister, who will call me over and over if Life360 shows me anywhere near a Starbucks.
There’s something about that persistence that makes my heart smile. He doesn’t give up. He doesn’t doubt. He just keeps calling until he gets my voice on the line.
It reminds me of what Jesus said about prayer in Luke 18:1–8. He told His disciples a parable about a widow who kept pleading with an unjust judge. She wouldn’t take no for an answer. And eventually, because of her persistence, he gave her what she needed.
Persistent prayer isn’t about nagging God, like a toddler demanding candy. It’s about showing up, trusting, and refusing to let discouragement keep us silent. Like Monkey Boy’s little Fisher-Price phone, God is always ready to answer, and He delights in our faithful persistence.
James 5:16 says:
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Actually that whole chapter is pretty great.
The next time you feel like your prayers aren’t reaching Heaven, remember: God isn’t ignoring you. Sometimes, He’s just waiting for the moment that will teach you patience—or wants to see your heart fully in it. And just like with a toddler on the phone, He will answer.
So keep dialing. Keep speaking. Keep praying. Because persistent love—yours and His—always gets through.
