I did something brave. Some might even say heroic. I watched K-Pop Demon Hunters with my Tater Tot, Miss May and Monkey Boy.
If you haven’t seen it, imagine if a girl group, a youth pastor, and an exorcism collided in neon lights and high-tempo choreography. I wasn’t sure whether to grab popcorn or holy water.
At first, I was mostly just trying to keep up. There were demons, sparkly jackets, emotional backstories, and more eyeliner than a high school homecoming in the south. My girls were absolutely living for it. Me? I waffled between “Wow, this song kinda rocks” and “Did she just banish a demon with a dance move?”
But somewhere between the beat drops and the banishing, something deeper hit me. These girls weren’t just fighting monsters—they were facing the darkness inside themselves. The demons weren’t just creepy creatures; they were the sins, fears, and regrets that had taken root in their hearts.
And if that doesn’t sound familiar, it should. Because the Bible’s been talking about that same kind of battle for centuries.
James 1:23–24 says:
“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”
In other words, we’re not supposed to glance at our mess and then pretend it’s not there. We’re supposed to face it. Confess it. Conquer it—with God’s help.
Watching my girls cheer for these animated heroines reminded me of two women from Scripture who also faced evil head-on: Deborah and Jael.
Deborah was a prophet and judge in Israel (Judges 4–5). When everyone else was afraid, she stood up and said:
“Go! This is the day the Lord has given Sisera into your hands” (Judges 4:14).
She led with courage, not fear—spiritual eyeliner intact, if you will. And Jael? She didn’t wait for someone else to handle the enemy. She saw the chance to strike, and she took it—tent peg and all. (If you don’t know that story, go read Judges 4:21. Let’s just say she nailed it. Literally.)
These women didn’t sit back and hope someone else would fix things. They listened to God’s call, picked up what they had, and fought back. And that’s what those K-Pop girls were doing in their own sparkly, animated way—facing their demons, standing strong, and finding redemption through courage and love.
As the credits rolled, my girls leapt off the couch, trying to spin-kick invisible demons out of the living room with Monkey Boy shaking his booty behind them.
I just sat there smiling, whispering a quiet prayer:
“Lord, help them always fight their battles like Deborah—bold in Your name—and like Jael—unafraid to act when it’s time. And maybe help them aim their kicks away from the kitchen island.”
Because whether it’s a battlefield, a dance floor, or the daily grind of motherhood, the fight is the same: face your sin, trust your God, and never forget who gives you the victory.
And if you can do it with a killer beat and a little glitter? Well, that’s just bonus.
