At 11 PM, most parents are either asleep or scrolling through Instagram. Not me. Not this night. My 16-year-old daughter, Miss Bug, burst into my room, tears in her eyes:
“Momma. D needs help. Can we go get her?”
D is 16, she was at a boy’s parents’ lake house with other guys and wanted to leave. In the span of one phone call, very quickly, I realized she wasn’t sober. Cue every parent’s internal alarm.
“Did you call your dad?” I asked.
“He won’t answer.”
“Did you try?”
“No. I don’t want to make him mad.”
Ah. Classic teen logic: better to risk danger than disappointment . But here’s the thing—God’s grace is bigger than any single mistake. By midnight, her dad picked her up safely. Love, mercy, and redemption won the night.
What struck me most? Miss Bug knows she can come to us with any problem—messy, scary, or confusing. Parenting isn’t just rules and discipline; it’s creating a safe space where kids know they are loved and protected. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
And the humor? There I was, in pajama pants, bare feet, and a messy mom bun, feeling like a heroine in a teen drama series. But Psalm 34:18 reassures me:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Parenting at 11 PM is chaotic, scary, and exhausting—but it’s also full of grace, love, and reminders that God works through the messy moments to teach, protect, and guide us all.
