Bacon Under My Pillow (and the Joy of God’s Gifts)

Bacon Under My Pillow (and the Joy of God’s Gifts)

Monkey Boy loves bacon.
Like really loves bacon.

This child has a whole dance routine dedicated to it. Picture this: little booty shaking, arms swinging side to side, and a sing-song voice chanting, “Bacon, bacon, bacon!” If Broadway ever needs a bacon-themed musical, I know exactly who to call.

Cooking breakfast feels like a race against time because I can’t fry it fast enough. Even on the big griddle! He’s sneaking it off the plate before I even set it down. Honestly, I think if Monkey Boy could survive on bacon alone, he would.

Case in point: the other night, I crawled into bed, all comfy, only to roll over and discover a half-eaten strip of bacontucked under my pillow. Apparently, he was saving it for later. Cute? Maybe. Fun to find with my cheek pressed against it? Not so much.

But it made me laugh—and it made me think.

When Monkey Boy does his bacon dance, he doesn’t care who’s watching. He’s just thrilled about his favorite thing. And isn’t that how God wants us to be about His gifts?

In Psalm 16:11, David writes:

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

Joy. Excitement. Celebration.
That’s what life in God’s presence is supposed to look like.

But too often, instead of celebrating His blessings, we forget them. We rush past them, or worse—we tuck them away like Monkey Boy with his bacon stash, never savoring them the way we should.

The Bible is full of stories where God’s people celebrated His goodness. Take King David, for example. In 2 Samuel 6:14, when the Ark of the Covenant was returned, David danced with all his might before the Lord. He didn’t care about looking “proper.” He just wanted to rejoice.

Monkey Boy’s bacon jig reminds me a little of that. Pure joy. No hesitation. No embarrassment. Just delight.

What if we did the same with God’s blessings? What if we danced a little when He answered a prayer, or shouted “thank you!” when we noticed His goodness in our day-to-day chaos?

That slice of bacon under my pillow wasn’t exactly a pleasant surprise—but it was a reminder. God’s gifts show up everywhere, sometimes in unexpected places. A kind word. A sunset. A giggle from a child. Even a messy, greasy reminder hidden under my pillow.

James 1:17 tells us:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

So today, I want to be a little more like Monkey Boy. I want to notice the good things, celebrate them, and maybe even dance a little.

(Though I’ll pass on storing them under my pillow.)

Moms, what’s the last “unexpected bacon” in your life—the hidden blessing you didn’t see coming?
