When the Chaos Hits (and Keeps on Hitting)

When the Chaos Hits (and Keeps on Hitting)

Do you ever have one of those days? The kind that makes you want to curl up in a ball, pull the covers over your head, and pretend you’re on a quiet beach somewhere with zero kids, zero laundry, and maybe a Dr.Pepper in hand? Yeah… today was that day.

It started at pick-up. Basketball Boy realized he left his tablet in his dad’s truck. Cue the meltdown. His Olympic-level fit woke up Monkey Boy, who made it very clear that the car seat was not his chosen place of residence. Meanwhile, Miss May was heartbroken because her roly-poly (yes, the bug) ran away during rest time. She screamed—a literal, banshee-level scream—all the way home. (Which reminds me, Hush Now Banshee is a great book.)

By the time we got through the door, it was like a three-ring circus. Homework wars, piano practice in the living room, and puppet practice across the room. Add in the soundtrack of crying, complaining, and clanging, and it had been five straight hours of chaos. My brain was begging for mercy. And I know in those moments I was far from June Cleaver and closer to Lois Wilkerson (where are my Malcom in the Middle fans)

So when bedtime finally arrived, I tucked them in with the speed of The Flash and collapsed into my bed, too tired to even think.

And then, in the silence, I remembered: God gets this. He knows what it feels like to be surrounded by noise, by complaining, by people who just don’t get it. Moses had the Israelites in the desert, grumbling about food and water (Numbers 11). At one point, Moses cried out to God,

“I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me” Numbers 11:14

Amen, Moses. Amen.

But God didn’t leave Moses to drown in the chaos. He gave him help. He reminded him that the burden wasn’t his to carry alone. And He reminds me (and you, too, mama) that the same Spirit who gave Moses strength is alive in us today.

So even on the days when I want to run away with Miss May’s roly-poly and live in the dirt, I cling to this truth:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

The chaos may roar, the homework may multiply, and the piano may play off-key—but God is steady, and His rest is real.

Until tomorrow’s round of carpool chaos, this weary (but loved) momma says “goodnight and God bless.”
